What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve originates in the lower back, runs through the buttocks, and branches out down the back of each leg. When this nerve becomes compressed or irritated, it can lead to the development of sciatica.

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or slipped disc in the lumbar spine, which occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc protrudes through a weakened or damaged outer layer. This protrusion can put pressure on the adjacent nerve roots, including the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain, inflammation, and various other symptoms.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The pain associated with sciatica is usually sharp, shooting, or electric-like in nature. It can start in the lower back or buttocks and radiate down the back of the leg, sometimes reaching the foot or toes. The pain is often described as severe and may worsen with certain movements, such as sitting, standing, or walking.  You may also experience numbness and tingling: People with sciatica may experience numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles sensation in the affected leg or foot. This occurs due to the disruption of nerve signals caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.  In some cases, sciatica can lead to muscle weakness or difficulty in moving the affected leg or foot. This weakness occurs when the nerve compression interferes with the normal functioning of the muscles.

Treatment for Sciatica

Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments or manipulations to help realign the spine, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical approach aimed at relieving pain and other symptoms caused by compression or pressure on the spinal discs, nerves, or other spinal structures. The procedure involves creating negative pressure or traction on the spine to alleviate the compression and promote healing.

Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercises can also help relieve sciatica pain. Our chiropractor will teach you how to perform specific exercises. These exercises can strengthen weak areas, help you maintain proper alignment, and increase flexibility.

Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes can also be beneficial in relieving discomfort. Our chiropractor may recommend an exercise regimen or recommend that you avoid sitting for long periods of time. They will discuss which activities can help alleviate symptoms and what can contribute to sciatic pain.
