Degenerative Disc

At Vitality Chiropractic, our Highlands Ranch chiropractic team meets hundreds of people from our community who are frustrated by degenerative disc disease. Pain medication may help provide temporary relief, but it does nothing to address the root cause of your pain and immobility. If you're looking for a different healing experience from your degenerative disc disease, find out how Vitality Chiropractic can help.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative disc disease happens when spinal discs thin and wear down over time. This can lead to several structural changes including narrowed joint spaces, compressed nerves, and tense spinal muscles prone to spasms. It's not always clear why some people develop degenerative disc disease and others don't, but common risk factors to look out for include:

  • A history of trauma to the spine
  • Repetitive bending, twisting, or lifting
  • Excessive sitting or sedentary behavior
  • Smoking
  • Aging
  • Family history and genes

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease can affect discs at every level of the spine, but we most commonly see it in the lower back and neck area. Symptoms vary from patient to patient but usually include:

  • Nerve pain
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg
  • Stiffness and soreness of the back
  • Muscle spasms and tension
  • Pain that gets worse with certain movements or activities like bending forward
  • Reduced tolerance to activities

Spinal discs don't have a lot of innervation or blood supply of their own, so if you have degenerative disc disease you might not feel disc pain so much as the pain from injury and inflammation to surrounding tissues.
